Born in Rehoboth, RI, in 1762, Smith grew up in Chester, VT. He apprenticed in Putney, VT, and began a medical practice in Cornish, NH. He attended Harvard where he obtained his M.B. in 1790, and continued his practice in the Upper Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont, for many years in partnership with Cyrus Perkins. Dr. Elijah Woodward Carpenter was born on September 7, 1778 in Brattleboro, Vermont. During his early years he attended the Brattleboro Academy and in 1811 began studying medicine with Dr. Cyrus Washburn of the neighboring town of Vernon.
